Burn Your Insecurities

Today, while I was cleaning out my journal drawer, I came across my Burn After Writing book. If you’re not familiar with what that is…it’s a book with different writing prompts that indulge in your deepest, darkest secrets. Okay, maybe it’s not that deep, but the point is to focus on the truth of YOU.

As I was flipping through the pages, I came across a section that talked about the one thing you would like to change about yourself. I read the answer that I wrote months ago.

My response dealt with appearance, the physical stuff. I remember thinking to myself “just one thing…I can name more than that”. Looking at my answer made me contemplate a few things. In reality, we all have our insecurities…aspects we want to change about ourselves. For some, that may never change and that’s okay.

However, I wish the question would have been “what is one thing that you LOVE about yourself?”. It is important to tell yourself that you are important. That you are beautiful. That you are unique. That you are YOU.

Deep down, those “things” I wanted to change months ago, are the parts of myself I’ve really focused on accepting and loving. It’s not easy to take on the “stuff” that you want to change about yourself and hey, maybe it will take some time. Actually, I know it will take some time.

Start the first step in writing your page to say all of the characteristics you love, instead of listing what you would like to change. If you want to work on changing anything about yourself, look a little deeper. Look at your character, the way you treat people and the way you’re living. Is there someone you need to forgive? Someone you need to apologize to?

Focus on making a change to your character, not your physical characteristics.

Burn your insecurities and start the chapter of loving yourself.
